How to Make the Most of Virtual Sessions

Telehealth uses technology, like video conferencing, to provide services at a distance, using interactive audio, video, or telephone communication.

Telemental health services offer several benefits, reducing travel time, increases accessibility to therapy, and allows for participation in sessions within your comfort zone. Empirical research has established telehealth sessions as a valuable and effective mode of healthcare delivery.

Telehealth is also accompanied by increased risk of security and technical difficulty, such as internet instability, computer or software glitches, and interruptions from others.

Technical issues can sometimes limit visual/auditory cues to you or your therapist and contribute to miscommunication or misunderstanding.

If your environment or technology creates distractions, you will not get as much out of the sessions. Here are some suggestions to help mitigate these risks:

If issues persist, impacting your treatment, your counsellor may discuss alternatives and ask you to consider changing modes or attending in-person counseling.

Planning to Get the Most from Virtual Sessions

  • Choose a private, quiet space—lock the door, use a “Do Not Disturb” sign, and let others know you’re unavailable, and ask that they not interrupt you unless necessary.

  • Consider who might enter the room during your session time, and plan your response to get back to the session quickly..

  • Pick the best device (laptop, tablet, phone) and ensure stable internet.

  • For video: use good lighting, a steady camera, and headphones for clearer sound.

  • For phone: use Wi-Fi if it improves the experience, and headphones if they improve sound quality with your computer.

If you would like to include a family member or another person in your session, please discuss this with your counselor to make arrangements.

By planning for a comfortable environment and minimizing technical problems, you can benefit from virtual sessions as you work toward your goals.
